Totonicapan vintage faja. (sash/belt)

This faja is believed to date from the early 20th century. It was hand woven on a back-strap loom in hand-spun cotton and silk thread. The use of silk indicates that it was likely worn ceremonially, but most of the silk has worn away. The basic style of these fajas has not changed significantly in over 100 years – See the Eisen Collection from 1902 in “Maya Textiles of Guatemala” by Margot Blum Schevill, p 205-209. It features a great variety of design motifs – geometric, hands, plants and animals. It is still in relatively good condition. The wear is very even and there are no tears or holes. It was acquired from Sr. Manuel Ramos at the “tienda” founded by his late mother, Maria, in Chichicastenango. W 7.5 x L 210 cm plus ties. (23-47) $ 150 or best offer.
