Totonicapán is a large Quiche speaking town that is the departmental capital of the Department of Totonicapán. It is a famed weaving center where elements of costumes worn throughout Maya Guatemala are woven. It is especially known for hair ribbons, shawls, ikat dyed skirts and intricately woven sash belts that have maintained stylistic consistency for over a century. Totonicapán huipils employ a variety of design motifs, but they are all long and many are woven with an indigo dyed ground.
