Isthmus Zapotec blusa. Most likely Tehuanapec or Juchitan, Oaxaca, Mexico.
[Note that we are informed that the correct
terminology is not “Tehuana” as that leaves out Juchitan and other nearby towns, whose styles are subtly different, but
often called “Tehuana”. Aka, “Frida blouses” because they were favored by Frida Kahlo.] Machine embroidery on red/orange
satin. Polka-dot lining. Our correspondent at the Oaxaca Textile Museum says, “in a traditional style of sewing-machine
embroidery (the external and internal bands in both are called "cuadro galleta"), but the bright red/magenta ground fabric
makes me think these are relatively recent huipiles.”
It is in like new condition. It was acquired from the collection of Yuri Saldyt. W 65 x L 54 cm. (16-137) $ 110. OBO
