Tecpan ceremonial huipil.
Known in Quiche as the “rij po’t”. Hand woven
on a back strap loom in two wide cotton panels. Most of the warp
stripes are “ixcaco” – hand spun undyed naturally brown cotton.
The surface decoration is supplementary brocade, much of it in silk, and featuring
extravagant plumed serpent motifs across the front and back.
Pre-1980. Tecpan ceremonial huipils are rare. This museum quality example is in very good condition.
Acquired from Maria Isabel Gonzales of Patzicia at the “bomberos”
market in Panajachel. 132 x 112 cm. (12-185) $ 550. OBO
