Sololá ceremonial mantel (table cloth).

This circa-1980 cargador was hand woven on a foot treadle loom in two warp-striped cotton panels. It features extensive and complex ikat, a dyeing technique used to pattern textiles that employs a resist dying process similar to tie-dye. According to the vendor, this mantel was used by the Santa Maria/Santa Cruz cofradia (Maya ceremonial society) of Sololá. It is large and in excellent condition. It was acquired from Paulina Ramos of Sololá at her space in front of the Casa de Huespedes San Francisco on Calle Santander in Panajachel. W150 x L156 cm. (9-230) $ 225.
