Solola cofradia chumpa - men's ceremonial jacket.
This circa-1980 men's ceremonial jacket was tailored from material hand woven on a back strap loom in indigo dyed hand-spun wool. It is decorated
with black appliqué designs. This jacket has been used in cofradia ceremonies. Authentic examples, especially in indigo, such as this one are rare.
It has zippered interior pockets. This unique and collectable jacket is in excellent condition. It was acquired from Sr. Sebastian Huarcus at his
tienda in the Solola market. W at shoulders 46 cm x L 53 x sleeves 50 cm. (19-200) $ 450 or best offer.
"The woolen jackets are constructed locally by specialized tailors, who use cloth woven in other communities. The blue jacket generally is closed,
while the others, the black, the gray, and the white, are open. All have black lapels and two or three pockets. . . The jackets are decorated with
appliques of soutache braid and castille tape on the lower edge, the back, the cuffs, elbows, pockets, and lapels. The traditional design for the
back is the "bat", also interpreted as the "butterfly", and the "quetzal"." "Tzute and Hierarchy in Sololá" by Guisela Mayén de castellanos.
