This pre-1980 men's ceremonial jacket was tailored from material hand woven on
a back strap loom in white wool. It is decorated with black appliqué designs. The design on the back symbolizes an eagle. This jacket
has been used in many ceremonies of the cofradia. Authentic examples such as this are rare. It has zippered interior pockets. This
jacket is in fair condition with a couple of small moth holes. It was acquired from a private collection in the US, originally purchased
in Guatemala in 1985. W at shoulders 47 x L 49 x sleeves 47 cm. (18-15) $ 140. OBO
"The woolen jackets are constructed locally by specialized tailors, who use cloth woven in other communities. The blue jacket generally
is closed, while the others, the black, the gray, and the white, are open. All have black lapels and two or three pockets. . . The
jackets are decorated with appliques of soutache braid and castille tape on the lower edge, the back, the cuffs, elbows, pockets, and
lapels. The traditional design for the back is the "bat", also interpreted as the "butterfly", and the "quetzal"." "Tzute and Hierarchy
in Sololá" by Guisela Mayén de castellanos. Museo Ixchel de Traje Indígena de Guatemala.
