Sololá chaqueta - men's ceremonial jacket. Shoulders 43 cm, length (shoulder to hem) 45 cm, sleeves 53 cm.
This circa-1980 men's ceremonial jacket was hand woven on a back strap loom in panels of undyed white wool
and then tailored into a jacket. It is decorated with black appliqué. The design on the back features
matched quetzal birds. This jacket has been worn in ceremonies of the Rosario cofradia society in Sololá.
Authentic examples such as this are rare. It is lined with blue corduroy and has zippered interior pockets.
This outstanding chumpa is in very good condition with minor stains and some wear on the edge of the collar.
It was acquireded from Paulina Ramos of Sololá. (11-256) $ 210.
"The woolen jackets are constructed locally by specialized tailors, who use cloth woven in other communities.
The blue jacket generally is closed, while the others, the black, the gray, and the white, are open. All have
black lapels and two or three pockets. . . The jackets are decorated with appliques of soutache braid and
castille tape on the lower edge, the back, the cuffs, elbows, pockets, and lapels. The traditional design for
the back is the "bat", also interpreted as the "butterfly", and the "quetzal"."
