This post-1980 hupil was hand woven on a back strap loom in two maroon warp-striped cotton/rayon panels joined by hand embroidered decorative seams. This fabric blend is known as “aleman” and is prized for its softness and drape. The surface decoration is supplementary brocade featuring animal and bird motifs. The head opening is trimmed with appliqué bejeweled ribbon. This outstanding example is in excellent condition. It was acquired from Petronila Mendez Bocó at the Mercado des Artesanos in Antigua.
