This post-1980 hupil was hand woven on a back strap loom in two white warp-striped cotton/rayon panels joined by hand embroidered decorative seams. This fabric blend is known as “aleman” and is prized for its softness and drape. The surface decoration is supplementary brocade featuring bird and plant motifs. The head opening is trimmed with hand embroidery. This classic example is in excellent condition. It was acquired from Sra. Juana Escalon at the “bomberos” textile market in Panajachel.
