Santiago Sacatepequez is a Kaqchikel speaking town in the Department of Sacatepéquez, just north of the Pan-American Highway. It is famous for its All Saints Day celebration where men fly giant, highly decorated paper kites from the town’s graveyard. “The Santiago Sacatepéquez huipil is . . of a heavy weave and the brocade is of the Picked-pile technique. . . The most common everyday huipil style of the 1960’s had row upon row of motifs, described locally as ‘eye of God’ and ‘stairway to Heaven.’ The background fabric is always red and white with stripes, sometimes close together, other times wide apart.” (Altman and West, Threads of Identity, Folwer Museum, p.174)
