Santiago Atitlán niña huipil. W45 x L89 cm opened. This fine contemporary niña huipil was hand woven on a back strap loom in one lavender cotton panel with dark purple warp stripes. This panel is decorated by hand embroidery. This modern example maintains the traditional warp stripes, but gone are the weft stripes that earlier created a regular grid. The embroidery features the very common flower garland around the head opening and large realistic birds, often copied from bird books, a modern innovation. Maya women in some villages such as Santiago Atitlán have dynamic fashion trends within a general traditional framework. This niña huipil is in excellent condition. It was acquired from Candelaria Mendoza Ruiz of Santiago Atitlán. (9-162) $ 100. SOLD.
