Santiago Atitlán daily huipil. W96 x L144 cm opened. This exceptional contemporary daily huipil was hand woven on a back strap loom in two white cotton panels. All surface decoration is by hand embroidery. This modern example maintains the traditional warp stripes, but gone are the weft stripes that earlier created a regular grid. It is also transitional in that it mixes more traditional small, fanciful birds with larger realistic ones, a modern trend. Of course, Maya women have fashion trends within a general indigenous regional framework. It was acquired from from Candelaria Mendoza Ruiz of Santiago Atitlán. (8-12) $ 420. SOLD.
