Santiago Atitlan ceremonial tzute (utility cloth).
This tzute was hand woven on a back-strap loom in one warp-striped cotton panel. The brown stripes are “ixcaco”, hand spun naturally brown cotton.
The purple stripes are believed to be murex, the prized sea snail dye. It is worn in conjunction with the ceremonial huipil. These tzutes are rare.
This very fine example is in excellent condition. It was acquired from an important private collection in Antigua.
