Santiago Atitlán corte (wrap skirt).

This pre-1980 corte was hand woven on a foot treadle loom in two matching weft striped cotton panels. Typical of Santiago Atitlán cortes, the panels are not equal width, with a main panel and a matching narrower piece added for length. This corte features the complex ikat dye patterns for which Santiago Atitlán is famous. Ikat is a dyeing technique used to pattern textiles that employs a resist dying process similar to tie-dye, except that different combinations of threads are dyed together before they are woven. This classic example is in the most traditional colors and is in excellent condition. Typically, we sell cortes for yardage. The top photograph shows only half of the material as it is sown together in one large loop by joining the warp ends. It was acquired from Sra. Petronila Mendez Bocó at the Mercado des Artesanos in Antigua. Weft 96 x Warp 324 cm. (17-54) $ 125. OBO
