This post-1980 corte was hand woven on a foot treadle loom in two weft striped cotton panels. Typical of Santiago Atitlán cortes, the panels are not equal width, with a main panel and a matching narrower piece added for length. This corte features the very fine ikat dye patterns for which Santiago Atitlán is famous, , here in indigo natural dye. Ikat is a dyeing technique used to pattern textiles that employs a resist dying process similar to tie-dye. This fine example is in excellent condition. It was acquired from Tomasa Calbo Mateo of Chichicastenango at the “bomberos” textile market in Panajachel. The top photograph shows only half of the material. Typically, we sell cortes for yardage.
