Santiago Atitlán vintage ceremonial huipil with tzute.

This rare pre-1980 ceremonial huipil was hand woven on a back strap loom in two white cotton base panels with purple warp stripes. The purple in both the huipil and the tzute mimics the natural mollusk purple dye. This huipil features the traditional hand embroidered collar design. These huipils are still worn on religious holidays such as Good Friday and at cofradia society functions. It is especially large and is worn outside the wrap skirt. The base thread is hand spun. It was acquired from Rosario Reanda Quiejú of Santiago Atitlan. Rosario asserts that the tzute is equally old and an essential costume element. They are sold as a set. W 108 x L 196 cm opened. (11-138) $ 160. OBO
