Santiago Atitlán huipil. W 90 x L 144 cm opened. This exceptional contemporary daily huipil was hand woven on a back strap loom in two white cotton base panels with purple warp stripes. The surface decoration is all hand embroidered. This modern example features realistic birds within the horizontal elements of the traditional background grid, but with the collar encircled with flowers and butterflies outside the grid. Many of the better known embroiderers in Santiago Atitlán have acquired bird books that allow them to replicate existing species, although often not those from the tropics. It is of the finest quality and in excellent condition. It was made by and acquired from master embroiderer Rosario Reanda Quieju of Santiago Atitlán, the sister of three of the village’s most renowned painters. (11-108) $ 440. Sold.
