Santiago Atitlán huipil. W 90 x L 156 cm opened. This very unique contemporary huipil was hand woven on a back strap loom in two lavender cotton base panels with widely set purple warp stripes and blue weft stripes in supplementary brocade on the lower section. The surface decoration above these blue stripes is all hand embroidered. This modern example features calla lilies, a common local flower, in several colors. It is highly unusual that a Santiago Atitlán huipil features all flowers and no birds. The elements outlining the flowers are raised so as to give the surface texture. It is extra-large, of the finest quality and in excellent condition. It was made by and acquired from master embroiderer Rosario Reanda Quieju of Santiago Atitlán, sister of three of the village’s most renowned painters. (11-107) $ 440. Sold.
