Santiago Atitlán huipil. W 86 x L 179 cm opened. This exceptional contemporary daily huipil was hand woven on a back strap loom in two blue cotton base panels with purple warp stripes. The surface decoration is all hand embroidery. This modern example features realistic birds within the horizontal stripes of the traditional background grid. The parrots that encircle the collar, however, are larger and transcend the grid. The shoulders are decorated with rows of flowers done with a wrapped needle technique.
