Santiago Atitlán huipil. W 83 x L 152 cm opened. This fine post-1980 daily huipil was hand woven on a back strap
loom in two light blue cotton base panels with purple warp stripes. The surface decoration is all hand embroidery.
This example features fanciful birds within the horizontal stripes of the traditional grid background. This is
typical of Santiago Atitlan huipils from the 1980’s although huipils that recall this style are still made. It is
of very fine quality and in very good condition. It was acquired from and probably made by Petronila Mendoza Ruiz,
although it may be the work of her late sister, Candelaria. (11-105) $ 390.
