Santiago Atitlán daily huipil. W93 x L184 cm opened. This very fine contemporary huipil was hand woven on a back strap loom in two light purple cotton
base panels with black or very dark maroon warp stripes. A grid is formed by supplementary brocade weft stripes that become quite thick in the upper portion
and incorporate some metallic thread. The decoration of birds and flowers is all hand embroidery and comes in two distinct forms. Around the collar and
center seam, the birds are realistic and completely outside the grid. Within the grid are the older style glyph birds. This modern example is of very high
quality and in excellent condition. It was made by and acquired from master embroiderer Rosario Reanda Quieju of Santiago Atitlán, the sister of three of the
village’s most renowned painters. (10-175) $425. SOLD.
