Santiago Atitlán daily huipil.

This post-1980 huipil was hand woven on a back strap loom in two light blue cotton base panels with maroon warp stripes. The surface decoration is all hand embroidered. In this modern example, weft stripes, the horizontal element of the traditional base grid, have disappeared and the embroidered birds, butterflies and flowers are not structured by this background. This fine example is in excellent condition. It was acquired from Elena Batz of Patzún at the La Fuente textile market in Antigua Guatemala. W 87 x L 84 cm. (10-167) $ 150.
