Santa Maria de Jesus ceremonial huipil.
This 1980 or earlier ceremonial huipil was hand woven on a back strap loom in three white cotton base panels of hand
spun thread. It is very large and long. The principal decoration is supplementary brocade that features plumed serpent, universal diamond, double-headed
eagle and other motifs. The head and arm openings are trimmed in blue velvet. It has two “lunas” of matching velvet. Santa Maria de Jesus ceremonial
huipils are rare. This very fine example is in excellent condition. It was acquired from Petronila Mendez Bocó of Santa Maria de Jesus.
