Santa Catarina Palopó saint’s huipil.
This very fine pre-1970 huipil was hand woven on a back strap loom in three red and white warp-striped cotton base
panels. The center panel is wider and with a different color combination. The base panels utilize hand spun thread and are woven with an exceptionally tight
weave. The panels are decorated with supplementary weft brocade featuring geometric motifs typical of older huipils from Santa Catarina Palopó. The head and
arm openings are small because this huipil was used to decorate the statue of the Virgin Mary in the local Catholic church. Saint’s huipils are very rare.
It was acquired from Sofia Monroy Perez of San Pedro Sacatepequez (G) at the La Fuente textile market in Antigua Guatemala. It is in excellent condition and
it is doubtful that it has ever been worn by a person. W89 x L90 cm. (12-269) $ 420. OBO
