Santa Catarina Palopó is a small, picturesque Kaqchikel speaking farming town on the eastern shore of Lake Atitlán. Both the men and women wear traditional
dress. The women of Santa Catarina have a long history of selling their textiles, especially to tourists in the nearby town of Panajachel. Although they have
maintained their three panel construction, there has been a dramatic recent evolution in the design of Santa Catarina huipils. Those of the 1970’s or earlier had a
base of red and white vertical stripes with red decorative brocade, primarily on the center panel. They have since evolved in several steps to solid color bases of
blue and maroon and heavy brocade of green and blue on all three panels.
