Santa Apolonia is a Kaqchikel speaking town in the Department of Chimaltenango. It produces strong utility baskets and red pottery, the latter since Precolumbian times. Its daily huipil features a manta base, intricate embroidery around the neck and arm holes and embroidered decoration only on one side – the back – done to look like brocade. The ceremonial sobre-huipil resembles that of nearby Tecpan, and employs extensive use of hand spun naturally brown cotton (ixcaco). The ceremonial huipils are very rare.
