San Raymundo Sacatepequez ceremonial huipil.

This pre-1980 huipil was hand woven on a back strap loom in two well-matched, warp-striped cotton base panels. The brown warp stripes, composed of individual threads, are “ixcaco”, hand spun, naturally brown cotton. These panels are decorated by supplementary brocade, some in silk, featuring bird, universal diamond and plumed serpent motifs. San Raymundo huipils are similar to nearby San Juan, but with more purple and greater color variety. The head opening is trimmed with a hand-embroidered buttonhole stitch and opened for easy access. Because some of the brocade is in silk, this huipil was likely used ceremonially. San Raymundo huipils are uncommon. This exceptional example is in excellent condition. It was acquired from Sra. Carmen Tepeu of San Pedro Sacatepequez (G) at the La Fuente textile market in Antigua Guatemala. W 95 x L 57 cm. (16-175) $ 325. OBO
