San Rafael Petzal corte – wrap skirt. Weft 80 x Warp 198 cm opened. This circa-1980 corte was hand woven on a back strap loom in two cotton/rayon panels joined by hand embroidered decorative seams. These panels are decorated with supplementary brocade in bird, animal, plant and geometric motifs in a style unique to San Rafael. Cortes of the Colotenango area, including San Ildefonso Ixtahuacan and San Rafael Petzal, are the only ones in Guatemala woven on back strap looms. All traditional textiles in the San Rafael Petzal style are rare, especially cortes. This highly collectable corte is in very good condition. It was acquired from Juana Mateo Rosales of Panajachel. (9-180) $230. Sold.
