San Rafael Petzal daily huipil. W80 x L198 cm opened. This circa-1980 huipil was hand woven on a back strap
loom in three maroon/mauve striped cotton/rayon base panels. This fabric combination is prized for its softness
and drape. The center panel is wider and more heavily decorated. These panels are joined by hand embroidered
decorative seams. The decoration features supplementary brocade in bird, animal, plant and geometric motifs in a
style unique to San Rafael. It shares some characteristics of the larger nearby town of Colotenango. San Rafael
Petzal style huipils are rare. This fine example is in very good condition. It was acquired from Ana Carolina
Ajanel of Chichicastenango. (9-110) $140. Sold.
