San Rafael Petzal ceremonial huipil.

This post-1980 huipil was hand woven on a back strap loom in three maroon cotton/rayon blend panels, a fabric combination known as “aleman” and prized for its softness and drape. These panels are joined by elaborate hand embroidered decorative seams. The surface decoration features rows of supplementary brocade in bird, animal, insect and universal diamond motifs. The head and arm openings are trimmed with hand embroidery. This huipil is considered ceremonial because of its large size and the quality and extensiveness of its supplementary brocade decoration. San Rafael Petzal huipils are uncommon. Ceremonial examples are quire rare. This is the best example we’ve seen and is in excellent condition. It was acquired from Sra. Rose Hernandez at her tienda in the Mercado des Artesanos in Antigua. W 88 x L 62 cm. (19-158) $ 250 or best offer.
