San Rafael Petzal daily huipil.
This post-1980 huipil was hand woven on a back strap loom in three maroon and
white, warp-striped cotton/rayon blend panels, a fabric combination known as “aleman” and prized for its softness
and drape. These panels are joined by elaborate hand embroidered decorative seams in the form of insects. The
surface decoration features rows of supplementary brocade in facing-birds, animal and universal diamond motifs.
The head opening is trimmed with embroidery. It shares some characteristics of the larger nearby town of
Colotenango. San Rafael Petzal huipils are rare. This fine example is in excellent condition. It was
acquired from Petronila Mendez Bocó at the Mercado des Artesanos in Antigua. W 91 x L 48 cm.
