San Pedro Ayampuc daily huipil.
This circa-1980 huipil was hand woven on a back strap loom in two wide white cotton base panels. These panels are heavily
decorated with supplementary brocade in predominantly red horizontal bands featuring the “portals” motif with the plumed serpent motif across the shoulders.
The head opening is trimmed with hand embroidery in multicolored buttonhole stitch. Ayampuc huipils are essentially extinct as the town has been absorbed
into Guatemala City. It is doubtful that this style huipil is still being made. Examples are very rare. This fine example is in excellent condition.
It was acquired from the Nom Po’t Collection of Antigua Guatemala. W91 x L62 cm. (8-312) $ 225.
