San Pedro Ayampuc ceremonial huipil. W114 x L138 cm opened. This large post-1980 huipil was hand woven on a back strap loom in two wide white cotton base panels. These panels are heavily decorated with supplementary brocade in predominantly red horizontal bands featuring geometric motifs with a row of universal diamonds across the shoulders. The head opening is trimmed with a thick band of hand embroidery in blue. This huipil was used in cofradia society ceremonies, weddings and other celebrations. Ayampuc huipils are essentially extinct as the town has been absorbed into Guatemala City and we don’t believe this style huipil is still being made. Hence, examples are very rare, especially ceremonials. This fine example is in excellent condition. It was acquired from Juana Mateo Rosales of Panajachel. (8-175) $ 150. OBO
