San Pedro Ayampuc ceremonial huipil.

This large pre-1980 ceremonial huipil was hand woven on a back strap loom in two wide white cotton base panels decorated with dense supplementary brocade in red and white horizontal bands some featuring double-headed eagle motifs. This huipil was used in cofradia society ceremonies, weddings and other celebrations. Ayampuc huipils are essentially extinct as we don’t believe they are still being made and worn. Hence, examples are very rare, especially ceremonials. This fine example is in very good condition. From Petronila Mendez Bocó of Santa Maria de Jesus at her stall in the Mercado des Artesanos in Antigua. W 103 x L 61 cm. (6-350) $ 320. OBO
