San Pedro Ayampuc ceremonial huipil. W112 x L138 cm opened. This large pre-1980 huipil was hand woven on a back
strap loom in two wide white cotton base panels. These panels are heavily decorated with supplementary brocade in
predominantly red horizontal bands featuring bird, animal and geometric motifs. The head opening is trimmed with a
hand embroidered chain stitch in purple. This huipil was used in cofradia society ceremonies, weddings and other
celebrations. Ayampuc huipils are essentially extinct as we don’t believe they are still being made. Hence,
examples are very rare, especially ceremonials. This finest quality example is in excellent condition. It was
collected by Jane Bartter of San Antonio in 1980. (10-373) $ 360.
