San Mateo Ixtatán huipil.

Because of its relatively small size compared to the typically very large huipils of this village, this is possibly a huipil de nina for an adolescent. This very fine circa-1980 huipil is all hand embroidered on a double thickness of commercial “manta” cotton fabric, the traditional style. The finest examples, such as this one, are reversible, equal on both sides and have the original collars with rows of appliqué ribbon on a cotton base. In the typical style, the principal decorative motif is of overlapping stars with complete coverage except for a band of flowers embroidered on the exposed white base at the bottom. These huipils typically weigh 10-15 lbs but this one weighs perhaps half that. This outstanding example is in excellent condition. Acquired from Sra. Carmen Tepeú at the La Fuente textile market in Antigua. W 83 x L 58 cm. (16-176) $ 325. OBO
