San Martin Jilotepeque ceremonial huipil.
Also used as the ceremonial huipil in Sumpango. This circa-1980 huipil was hand woven on a
back strap loom in two well-matched indigo dyed cotton panels that are joined by a heavy, hand-embroidered decorative seams, mainly in
silk. The surface decoration is very well woven supplementary brocade to the hem with plumed serpent and other geometric motifs, much of
it in silk. The head and arm openings are trimmed in velvet. Jilotepeque ceremonial huipils on indigo and with silk are increasingly rare.
This exceptional example is in excellent condition. It was acquired from a private collection in Guatemala.
W 84 x L 58 cm. (18-47) $ 260 OBO
The lower two photographs were taken in San Martin Jilotepeque and Sumpango by Frank Lee Mays.
