San Martin Jilotepeque ceremonial huipil. W 87 x L 112 cm opened. This post-1980 huipil was hand woven on a back strap loom in two well-matched, black cotton base panels. The panels are joined by large, multi-colored hand embroidered decorative seams. These panels are completely covered to the hem with intricate supplementary brocade decoration, much of it in silk. This brocade features plumed serpent and other geometric motifs. The head and arm openings are trimmed with blue velveteen. Jiolotepeque ceremonial huipils are increasingly rare. This large and fine example is in excellent condition. It was acquired from Petronila Mendez Bocó at the Artesanos market in Antigua Guatemala. See Petronila’s picture in our “Vendors” section. (11-76) $ 350.
