San Martin Jilotepeque is a large Kaqchikel speaking town in the Department of Chimaltenango. It is an important weaving center that supplies and inspires huipils worn in several surrounding towns. “The huipil of Jilotepeque is characterized by two-panel construction and a pattern of five major horizontal bands with alternating motif fillers. When draped on the body, the back and front patterning is virtually identical. Pechos (“breast bands”) usually consisting of chevron or zigzag patterns bordered by narrower bands of the same motifs, are found at the center front and back.” (Conte, Maya Culture & Costume, Taylor Museum, p. 39)
