San Lucas Toliman is a mixed Kaqchikel - Tzutujil speaking town on the southeast shore of Lake Atitlán in the Department of Sololá. It is known for its coffee production and lies at the intersection with the major highway between the lake and the coast. It was founded in the 16th century and its name, from the Nahuatl language of central Mexico, means “place where the tule (reed) is harvested”. Its older huipils are typically on a red and white striped base. Modern ones use many colors for the base, but use similar designs in the brocade – rows of miniature animal, bird and geometric figures.
