San José Poaquil ceremonial (sobre) huipil.
Hand woven on a back strap loom in two well-matched
panels with an “ixcaco” base (hand spun, undyed, naturally brown cotton) decorated with horizontal
bans of supplementary brocade, some of it in silk. It features the broad red band across the shoulders,
typical of huipils from Poaquil and older ones from nearby Comalapa. The supplementary brocade depicts
bird and universal diamond motifs. Ceremonial huipils from Poaquil are rare. Circa 1975. This fine
example is in excellent condition.
From the collection of Joan Jacobson of Tucson. W 87 x L 55 cm. 21-246. $ 225 or best offer.
