This post-1980 huipil was hand woven on a back strap loom in three red and white warp-striped cotton/rayon base panels. These panels are joined by “randas”, hand embroidered decorative seams. This thread blend is called “aleman” and is prized for its softness and drape. The panels are decorated with supplementary brocade in geometric patterns typical of the area. The center panel is wider and more extensively decorated. The weaving in the San Ildefonso huipil resembles that of the huipil from nearby Colotenango in the use of supplementary brocade in the “soumak” style, but it is distinguished by the hand-embroidered decoration around the collar. This fine example is in excellent condition. It was acquired from Ema and Carmen Tepeu of San Pedro Sacatepequez (G) at the La Fuente market in Antigua Guatemala. W87 x L45 cm. (10-110) $ 140.
