San Antonio Palopó is a Kaqchikel speaking town in the Department of Sololá on the eastern shore of Lake Atitlán “with adobe houses climbing the hillside rising from the lakeshore”. (Glassman, Guatemala Guide, p. 235) It is known both for its women’s and men’s traditional dress. The woman’s huipil features a complex ground with little or no additional decoration, but often accentuated with several strands of gold beads. The men’s dress includes heavily brocaded pants that come to the mid-calf, sometimes with a wool kilt (rodillera), a sash and a distinctive shirt of a material similar to the woman’s huipil.
