San Antonio Aguas Calientes daily huipil.
This circa-1980 daily huipil was hand woven on a back strap loom in two very well matched red cotton panels. The
most unique feature of San Antonio A.C. huipils is the “marcador” floral motifs, here seen across the shoulders. This decoration is double supplementary weft
brocade, where the design appears equally on both sides. This technique is only done in San Antonio A.C. and their huipils are widely considered the best
woven huipils among the Maya of Guatemala. Their style influences those of many nearby towns. This example features very closely worked geometric designs,
a style more typical of older examples. It is in very good condition. It was acquired from Petronila Mendez Bocó of Santa Maria de Jesus at the Mercado des
Artesanos in Antigua Guatemala. W77 x L59 cm. (9-70) $ 100.
