San Antonio Aguas Calientes faja – woman’s sash. W 5 x L 208 cm plus ties. This circa-1980 faja was hand woven
on a back strap belt loom. It features warp patterns depicting flowers, shrimp and, most notably, scorpions.
These traditional belts have now largely been replaced in San Antonio Aguas Calientes by a style that incorporates
the double supplementary weft brocade of their huipils. Hence, the wider “scorpion belts”, such as this one, are
now seldom made and older ones are highly collectable. This faja is in very good condition. It was acquired from
Tomasa Calbó Mateo of Chichicastenango. (9-280) $50.
