San Antonio Aguas Calientes faja (woman’s sash).

The scorpion belt. This post-1980 faja was hand woven on a back strap loom in a red cotton base. It features supplementary brocade depicting plants and scorpions. These belts are now being replaced in San Antonio Aguas Calientes by a style that utilizes the same brocade techniques that distinguish their huipils. Hence, fajas in this older style are increasingly uncommon. This fine example is in very good condition. It was acquired from Tomasa Calbó Mateo of Chichicastenango at the “bomberos” textile market in Panajachel. W 4 x L 213 cm plus ties. (9-279) $45. OBO
