San Antonio Aguas Calientes tzute. W70 x L110 cm. This fine post-1980 tzute was hand woven on a back strap loom in two warp striped cotton base panels that are joined by a hand embroidered decorative seam. It features extensive double supplementary weft brocade in bird and plant motifs, where the design appears equally on both sides. San Antonio Aguas Calientes is the only locality to employ this difficult technique and, as a result, items from this village are often considered the finest weavings in Guatemala. These pieces are often used eremonially. This example is in excellent condition. It was collected from Bonifacia Mendez Bocó of Santa Maria de Jesus. (8-243) $ 320.
