San Antonio Aguas Calientes vintage tzute.

This pre-1980 tzute was hand woven on a back strap loom in two cotton warp striped base panels that are joined by a hand embroidered decorative seam. It features double supplementary weft brocade, where the design appears equally on both sides, but more sparsely than more recent examples. San Antonio Aguas Calientes is the only locality to employ this difficult technique and, as a result, items from this village are often considered the finest weavings in Guatemala. Such pieces are often used ceremonially. This one was acquired from Froilana Vasquez of San Pedro Sacatepequez (G). W73 x L102 cm. (7-299) $ 100. OBO
