San Antonio Aguas Calientes huipil.
Hand woven on a back strap loom in two very
well-matched maroon cotton panels. The unique feature of San Antonio A.C. huipils
is the "marcador" decoration, usually in floral and bird patterns. This decoration
is double supplementary weft brocade, with the design appearing equally on both sides.
This type of weaving is only done in this village. San Antonio A. C. huipils are
widely considered the best-woven huipils among the Maya of Guatemala and their style
influences that of many nearby villages. Circa 1980. This fine weaving is in excellent condition.
From the collection of Yuri Saldyt. W 74 x L 64 cm. 21-106. $ 200 or best offer.
